Laws, Damn Laws and Compliance: Part 2- China, Asia's Giant

  • Summary

  • Join me in a conversation with Scott Warren, Partner at Squire, Patton Boggs while we unpack China's privacy regime. We discuss China's most recent privacy law the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) and apply analytical tools to understand what compliance with it will look like. This conversation was recorded April 4, 2022, just five months after the law was enacted.

Reports suggest that China will be responsible for storing over a quarter of the world’s global online data by 2025. An ITU report which is accessible at: https://www.itu.int/itu-d/reports/statistics/facts-figures-2021/index/ states that the Asia Pacific region has the highest total of international bandwidth use. These indicators show that China is at the head of data creation as well as data flows. Scott also refers to this Ponemon Study titled Cost of a Data Breach Report 2021, and available at www.ibm.com.
