    Jun 17 2022

Thailand and Vietnam are relatively new kids on the privacy block, with Thailand publishing its Personal Data Protection Act in May 2019 and Vietnam passing its Cybersecurity Law in June 2018. What do their privacy regimes have in common, and how are they different? Tune in as Scott Warren and I meander through these laws and talk about how companies might navigate compliance with them. Scott also shares his views on a potential regional leader, surveillance and what he thinks are the most pressing issues in global privacy.

  • Laws, Damn Laws and Compliance: Part 3- Japan, Korea and Adequacy
    May 19 2022

To be 'adequate' in the world of privacy means that as a country, you get to join an exclusive club of countries that are deemed by the European Commission as having adequate personal data protections. Japan was the first country to be given an adequacy decision in January 2019, and Korea was most recently granted entrance to the club in December 2021.  As Scott and I unpack the laws in these jurisdictions, we examine what they've done right, how they  enforce their laws and the role that culture plays in privacy compliance.

  • Laws, Damn Laws and Compliance: Part 2- China, Asia's Giant
    May 6 2022

Join me in a conversation with Scott Warren, Partner at Squire, Patton Boggs while we unpack China's privacy regime. We discuss China's most recent privacy law the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) and apply analytical tools to understand what compliance with it will look like. This conversation was recorded April 4, 2022, just five months after the law was enacted.

Reports suggest that China will be responsible for storing over a quarter of the world’s global online data by 2025. An ITU report which is accessible at: https://www.itu.int/itu-d/reports/statistics/facts-figures-2021/index/ states that the Asia Pacific region has the highest total of international bandwidth use. These indicators show that China is at the head of data creation as well as data flows. Scott also refers to this Ponemon Study titled Cost of a Data Breach Report 2021, and available at www.ibm.com.
