    Oct 10 2024

Celebrating National Wellness Month, this episode focused on Self Care. We looked at the contribution of hearing and brain health. We explored several approaches that can help: writing, Joy Journaling, Ayurvedic massage, and a wide variety of online courses that combine “learning” with “community.”

Recorded on 8-25-22, this episode is part of our Fitness and Wellness series.
Speakers are listed in their order of appearance.

Dr. Krystal L. Culler, Founder, Virtual Brain Health Center
‘If you have 30 minutes a day for your own personal brain care,
It's 5 minutes of meditation, 10 minutes of brain fitness, 10 minutes of purposeful movement for your body, a 5 minute brain break. And bonus one minute practicing gratitude in some way. ‘

Charlotte Yeh MD, Chief Medical Officer, AARP (through July 2024; currently Founder, Yeh Innovations and Chief Experience Officer, Cherish)

On the importance of address hearing impairment with hearing tests and hearing aids:
'I like to say "you think you're old with hearing aids. You are old without hearing aids". Hearing aids will keep you younger and connected. But the stigma of hearing aids, that negative perception of aging that is so pervasive is what's keeping people from getting their hearing tests.'

‘There are twice as many people who take their dogs to the vet than the number of people who get their hearing tested.’

    Liz Miller, GetSetUp
'One of our popular classes is around gratitude or changing negative thinking, we offer a number of classes around meditation for wellness and fitness classes, of course, which are super important. And then also around this idea of neuroplasticity from trivia and games for brain health.'

Trent True, Digital Content Architect, Gothic Scribe Studio
'With journaling, the good news is you don't have to worry about rules with style or voice or expectations. Blogging is for an audience, journaling fundamentally is for you.'

    Carol Nace, Bodhi Ayurveda
‘Ayurveda is a practice that's over 5000 years old. The goal is to help us live to 100 years in a happy and healthy way.’
Please check out Carol’s Self Care tips.

Deborah Harlow, Joy Journaling, The Joyful Leader
“Joy Journaling as a practice is more than journaling of other kinds where you're writing out or diary practices or things like that. It's a combination of doodling and art therapy and affirmations.”
