• Making the Most of Office Occupancy
    Dec 14 2022

In the fall of 2019, Honghao Deng and his co-founder Jiani Zeng joined 500 Global’s accelerator program, as part of Batch 26. Their company Butlr, an MIT Media Lab spin-out, had developed sensors that anonymously track through body heat how people move indoors, to help businesses manage the use of commercial space. Applications include monitoring foot traffic, maintaining clean bathrooms, or activating air conditioning when needed.

Butlr was set on deploying its sensors in commercial buildings and retail stores, when Covid-19 hit and traffic vanished during lockdowns. “This whole entrepreneurial journey is always winding. In a way it feels like you're almost on track, but it's never the case, right?” says Honghao, a computational designer.

This may sound familiar to most founders, but Honghao and Jiani made the best out of a bad situation. They decided to focus on helping commercial spaces reopen by managing occupancy. The advent of hybrid work also brought new opportunities to provide businesses with data, as they make leasing and energy-saving decisions.

  • Birthing Southeast Asia’s New Tech Giants
    Oct 28 2022

Vishal Harnal has had more than a ringside seat to Southeast Asia’s transformation into a hotbed of innovation. He was an active enabler of the ecosystem–along with Managing Partner Khailee Ng. 500 Global is a prominent backer of the region’s 52 unicorns, according to TechInAsia. They include Grab, Bukalapak, Carsome, and FinAccel. Those companies are now giving birth to a pool of new entrepreneurs, who will further enrich the ecosystem. Waiting to be deployed into those startups, says Vishal, is an estimated $8 billion in dry powder.

Vishal shares those insights and more on this episode of Rise of the Next.

  • On a Quest to Make Health Insurance More Accessible
    Oct 14 2022

A techie, Christina Cai stumbled into healthcare when she realized that her AI-enabled technology could unlock insights from previously unused data in electronic health records, wearables and other digital health tools, such as glucose and blood pressure monitors. That information could provide a different assessment of a person’s health risk, and potentially lower the barrier to getting health insurance. As an example, she says people who have diabetes but maintain a healthy lifestyle, can have a more positive health assessment score than a sedentary person.

Lydia.ai now operates in Taiwan, where the government maintains a national health database that is accessible to third party developers, with patient consent.

Christina shares these insights and more on Rise of the Next.

  • StrongHer Ventures’ Ankita Vashistha Is On A Mission To Back Women-Focused Startups
    Sep 1 2022

With funding for female founders still dismally low, female investors can make a difference

When Ankita Vashistha began making angel investments in Singapore, India, and the U.S. more than a decade ago, she was struck by the dearth of female founders–a problem that persists to this day. In the U.S., female-founded startups still garner only 2% of venture capital funding.

This led her to launch her first fund in 2015 and StrongHer Ventures two years ago, both focusing on early stage startups that are either founded by women or cater to female consumers–the first such funds in India, according to Ankita. StrongHer invests in founders primarily in the U.S., U.K., India who are building companies in fintech, healthcare, future of work, consumer, and Web3.

Along the way, Ankita sharpened her investment skills by participating in 500 Global’s venture education program. You can listen to her journey into venture capital and how she hopes to make a difference on this episode of the Rise of the Next.

  • 500 Global Latin America Celebrates 10 years
    Aug 2 2022

Happy birthday 500 Latin America! Ten years ago, Managing Partner Santiago Zavala joined 500 Global to help set up our Mexico City office. Things have come a long way since. “It was very hard to get people from the U.S. to invest into the startups because they didn't know the industry,” he recalls of the early days.

No more. Last year, Latin America experienced record levels of venture funding, which remained strong in Q1 2022 compared to Q1 2021. Over the past decade, 500 Latin America has made more than 250 early stage investments across Spanish-speaking countries, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru. Two are now unicorns: Mexico-based Clip and Konfio.

Despite the economic downturn, Santiago believes the best is yet to come. Tune into Rise of the Next to listen.

  • Writing the ESG Playbook for Early Stage Startups
    Jul 14 2022

500 Global has been helping portfolio companies over the past two years implement ESG policies and practices from the start, by providing resources and guidance. Spearheading the effort is Tracy Barba, who has spent two decades in the impact investing space.

On Rise of the Next, Tracy sets the record straight on the difference between impact and ESG — something many people confuse, why the SEC's proposed rules to prevent greenwashing is a good thing, and shares some of the steps she’s taken to help 500 founders navigate ESG. The latter is uncharted territory given how young the companies are, but the ultimate goal is to minimize risk and build value. 500 Global open-sources its resources and practices, and publishes its progress in an annual report.

It is as much about educating early stage venture capitalists. Last year, Tracy helped launch ESG4VC, an organization that brings together U.S.-based GPs and LPs that want to integrate ESG practices into their investment process and portfolio management.

  • Cleaning up a Healthcare Mess
    Jun 29 2022

Earlier this year, the No Surprises Act went into effect to protect patients from such unexpected situations and fine healthcare providers who violate patient billing regulations. That’s all good, but the fact remains that nearly half of provider directories remain inaccurate according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Besides out of network surprises, that includes wrong phone numbers or addresses.

Kevin Krauth, the founder of Orderly Health, is trying to solve this persistent problem by helping hospitals, clinics, health plans and others keep their information up to date, and reduce their risk of getting fines. He joins us to explain how Orderly Health works behind the scenes to pull the right data.

  • How StoreHub is Helping Small Retailers in Southeast Asia Digitize their Operations
    Jun 17 2022

Wai Hong Fong learned the ropes in retail by helping his uncle in Melbourne, Australia sell giftware online. That later led him to spot an opportunity to supply small shops and cafés in Southeast Asia with point of sale tools to manage their inventory, orders and payments, and track performance. Previously with no easy access to technology, his customers were able to make the leap online.

Wai Hong estimates there are 20 million such small businesses in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines where his company StoreHub operates. “We want to kind of even out that technology inequality in the parts of the world where we felt that this is a major problem,” he says.

During the pandemic, he threw small restaurants a lifeline when StoreHub provided them with a consumer-facing food delivery app within 48 hours.

Wai Hong talks about his entrepreneurial journey from Melbourne to Shanghai to Petaling Jaya on this episode of Rise of the Next.
