• Ep. 171 Memento Mori: Embracing Mortality to Live More Fully with Jodi Wellman
    Sep 2 2024

Can acknowledging our mortality change the way we live our lives? I'm excited to bring you a thought-provoking episode with Jodi Wellman, author of "You Only Die Once." Jodi explores how the historical openness about death contrasts with today’s tendency to avoid the topic, and introduces terror management theory—a concept that shows how awareness of death can enhance our self-esteem and commitment to our worldviews.

We also discuss practical tools like the astonishingly alive quiz, which helps identify what truly makes life meaningful. Jodi emphasizes the balance between vitality and meaning, and how mental health plays a crucial role in living fully. Tune in for a powerful discussion on how embracing life's impermanence can lead to a richer, more fulfilling existence.

  • Ep. 169 Leadville 100 Special: Dreamchasing & Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Foundation with Ty Hall, Rodrigo Jimenez, and Veronica Rimbert
    Aug 12 2024

In 1982, Leadville's primary employer, Climax Mine, shut its doors and ceased operations. 3,000+ miners were instantly unemployed, devastating the town. Overnight, Lake County had the highest unemployment in the nation. In searching for ways to save the struggling community, the Leadville Trail 100 running race was born. Beginning in 1983 with 45 runners racing an epic 100 mile trek through the rugged Rocky Mountain terrain, the Leadville Race Series has now expanded with events from California to New York, hosting thousands of endurance runners and mountain bikers from all over the world.

Through the growing popularity of these race events the Lake County community has thrived. A Colorado Mountain College economic assessment in 2012 reported the races brought over $15 million into the county each year. Many athletes have fallen in love with Leadville and return for the events year after year, and many also want to give back. In 2002 the Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Foundation was created to harness the generous donations of racers to the local community. The Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization serving the needs of our historic and beloved Leadville, Lake County community.

In a selfless and impressive feat, Ty Hall and Rodrigo Jimenez start their LT100 Run and Bike in very last place. Then they DIG DEEP all day to pass as many athletes as possible, to raise money and awareness for the LT100 Legacy Foundation.

Donations come from athletes and supporters just like you, who pledge an amount per person passed, or a flat donation to support their efforts.

  • Ep. 166 Kari Loya: Playing Offense in the Alzheimer’s Journey and Living Fully with Human Connection and Outdoor Movement
    Jul 15 2024

Kari Loya began his career teaching in a first and second grade, Spanish bilingual classroom in Pasadena as part of Teach For America. That fueled a life-long passion for education and empowering others. He has since worked with a range of innovative educational organizations, from a prominent language school in Rio de Janeiro to a charter school in Silicon Valley. From a leading educational foundation in Los Angeles to a pioneering international school in New York City. Most recently, he served as head of an independent school in the Caribbean before beginning to coach others. Along the way, he graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College and earned an MBA from Columbia University.

Kari’s excellent book, Conversations Across America, is about a father-son journey of a lifetime: a 73-day, 4,600-mile cross-country bike trip Kari took in 2015 with his 75-year-old dad, Merv, who had early-stage Alzheimer’s. Their adventure reminds us of the power of perseverance and adaptability in the face of uncertainty. It’s also a heartwarming example of listening and discovery, including 300 short conversations with people who approached them along the way, providing a rich snapshot of America, especially rural America.

Conversations is a mix of Blue Highways, Tuesdays with Morrie, and Humans of New York… on a bike. As you read, you can’t help but reflect on your relationship with your own father and children, while gaining perspective on Alzheimer’s—which now afflicts more than six million Americans—and getting a sense of the TransAmerica Bike Trail and America itself. Above all, you will be inspired to seize-the-day with someone you love—whatever that means to you.
