At present in much of the United States, terminally ill patients do not have the option to choose a dignified death. So instead of being given a shot by a physician that would allow them a quick end, some patients starve to death as the digestive tract is one of the first systems to shut down during the dying process. This starvation period can last a long time - two months in the case of my grandmother.
