Heidi who has been orphaned, is taken from her alpine home with her beloved grandfather by her less than loving aunt to be a companion for a crippled child of a wealthy family in Frankfurt. They become bosom friends but Heidi becomes ill and has to return home, but when her crippled friend comes to the Alps for a visit, well, we don't want to spoil the story for you.

Toni loses his father at a young age, and his mother, Elsbeth, is tasked with trying to provide for her son in the country all by herself. Toni discovers a passion for wood-carving, but circumstances do not allow him to pursue this line of work, and he instead finds himself as a herdsman up in the mountains. This life doesn't agree well with little Toni, and he falls ill and winds up in a sanitarium. He does not get better until he is reunited with his mother and all at once life for Toni and Elsbeth takes a positive turn thanks to the help of another patient in the sanitarium.

The evergreen tale of the Swiss orphan girl Heidi has charmed and intrigued readers since its original publication in 1880. Heidi comes to live with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps where she befriends the animals and children, in particular the goatherd Peter. She is later taken away to the stern and confining home of the invalid Clara where she enriches the lives of those around her but longs to return home. After many adventures she returns to her grandfather's cabin in her beloved Alps.

First published in 1881, the subtitle of this book tells us that it was written “for children and those who love children”. Heidi, a 5-year-old orphan, is handed off by her young Aunt Dete to live with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps. Though her new life is foreign, Heidi soon falls in love with her grandfather, and he with her. They share a contented life of goat-herding. But when Grandfather refuses to allow Heidi to attend school in the small village below, quarrels ensue.
