Cherokee: A wonderful people with a history longer than sand has passed through the hour glass of time. The nation's economy, like that of other southeastern tribes, was based primarily on agriculture; they were farmers growing corn, beans, squash, sunflowers and tobacco. A major part of this audiobook was originally written and compiled in 1929 by Mrs. Jean (Augusta) Graham. She passed from this world in October of 1977 in her home town of Osceola, Missouri, after a long illness. She had retired in 1947 and was a member of the Osceola Presbyterian Church. She was active and much loved in the community.

“Jayhawkers” and “Red Legs” were enlisted into the Union army and praised as heroes of the country while “Partisan Rangers” of the Confederacy were branded “Bushwhackers” and “outlaws.” “Jayhawkers” under General James Lane rode into Osceola and burned it to the ground in 1861. Just one of many Missouri towns to be sacked and burned, but when the “Partisan Rangers” and Confederate Cavalry returned the favor, the whole world heard about it.

In the years following Brown v. Board of Education, countless Black citizens endured violent resistance and even death while fighting for their constitutional rights. One of those citizens, Clyde Kennard, a Korean War veteran and civil rights leader from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, attempted repeatedly to enroll at the all-white Mississippi Southern College in the late 1950s. In A Slow, Calculated Lynching, Devery S. Anderson tells the story of a man who paid the ultimate price for trying to attend a white college during Jim Crow.

Entrenched in secrecy, and regarded as men, they were sometimes revealed as women, by pregnancy or casualty.
