In August 1969, medical student Lizzie Baker sets off on a trip to Woodstock with her boyfriend and two other couples. When their van breaks down outside of Morganton, North Carolina, the group decides to hike up nearby Brown Mountain while they wait for the repairs to be finished. Lizzie's interest in nature prompts her to go on a walk by herself, hoping to get a glimpse of the legendary Brown Mountain Lights. When she unexpectedly encounters one, she naively reaches out to touch it and is thrown back in time to a place and lifestyle she comes to hate.

"I’m a Stranger Here” could be the song title guiding Lizzie Baker’s life. In the five years she spent on Brown Mountain during the Civil War, Lizzie wanted nothing more than to find the light that transported her back in time and return to the 20th century. While fleeing from bushwhackers in 1864, Lizzie, her friend Abbie Collins, and fiancé Josh Hampton encounter a light Lizzie believes is hers. Hoping to get to safety, she pushes Abbie into the light, expecting Josh to follow. She and Abbie wake to find that this is not the Brown Mountain they remember.

Although Lizzie Baker wants nothing more than to return to her time 110 years in the future, she remains stuck on Brown Mountain, NC, during the time of the Civil War - the bloodiest conflict in American history. An abolitionist, Lizzie lives in a state that has seceded from the Union and finds herself, as a woman of that era, unable to protect slaves being mistreated by their plantation owners, as well as women who suffer at the hands of their husbands, without rights or laws to protect them.

Lizzie Baker's only wish is to go home, but in order to do so, she has to find the one light on Brown Mountain that transported her back in time from 1969 to 1859. The antebellum South is a time she’s come to loathe, but that’s not the only reason she’s anxious to return home. The Civil War looms ever closer and she is frantic to leave before the deadliest and bloodiest conflict in American history descends on Brown Mountain. At night she secretly meets with Josh Hampton, a plantation owner’s son, risking her life as she helps him lead slaves to freedom. As time goes by, Lizzie begins to care deeply for Josh....

In the mid-1920s, Bessie Elliott and her husband Fletcher take in their six-year-old nephew John. They are determined to give him a warm and secure home on Stone Mountain, a place where he will feel loved and know he is always welcome. Having a child brings many changes to their daily life and even more for John, but it isn't long before he feels completely at home with his aunt and uncle.

In the dawning years of the 20th century, Bessie Daniels leaves her home town of Hot Springs and travels east over the mountains to live with her new husband Fletcher Elliott in the Broad River section of North Carolina. In 1906, they purchase 400 acres of the old Zachariah Solomon Plantation which includes a small house with a shack beside it, a branch of Cedar Creek and a row of dilapidated slave cabins... And ghosts.

In the waning years of the 19th century, Bessie Daniels grows up in the small town of Hot Springs in western North Carolina. Secure in the love of her father, resistant to her mother's desire that she be a proper Southern belle, Bessie is determined to forge her own way in life. Or, as her Cherokee great-grandmother Elisi puts it, to be a whistling woman. Life, however, has a few surprises in store for Bessie....

In a dystopian future, an epic battle between the sexes will determine who lives and who dies. After the Blue Pox pandemic wipes out 99.99 percent of males and 99.95 percent of females, the majority under the age of 50,18-year-old Madison wanders the countryside, lost and alone. She joins forces with Katherine, a former anthropologist, in search of a safe place to live, and the two find a group of women gathered on the campus of a small college in East Tennessee.

After six years, time-traveler/healer Lizzie Baker has finally made it back to her time in the 20th century with her husband Jonah, his sister Andrea, her son Joseph and partner Mike, Lizzie’s best friend Abbie, and Belinda and Pearl, the orphans they care for. Upon returning, Lizzie learns her father is suffering from a terminal illness and is determined to spend his remaining days caring for him.

Healer/time traveler Lizzie Baker remains in the mid 21st century, where chaos reigns as a foreign army slowly makes its way toward Brown Mountain, North Carolina. The horror stories told by people fleeing the invaders are frightening and Lizzie’s skills as a healer are in constant demand tending to the sick and injured, never knowing that this itself places her own life in danger.

Although healer/time traveler Lizzie Baker knows the possibility of war looms ahead, she elects to stay in the 21st century, instead of going back 100 years to her time or to the 19th century, where she spent the last five years of her life. The threat of war becomes a reality when Lizzie treats a fatally injured man in Morganton, North Carolina, who tells of the invasion of America by a foreign country.

After Bessie and Fletcher Elliott lose all their money when their bank fails at the beginning of the Great Depression, Fletch is forced to seek employment elsewhere in order to sustain their struggling farm on Stone Mountain, North Carolina. Fletch’s brothers, Jim and Tom, working in a coal mine in Beacham, West Virginia, convince Fletch that there is money to be made as a miner, so he and Bessie move to Beacham in hopes of a temporary measure that will enable them to keep their farm.
