The Apostle James tells us that the prophet Elijah was a man ''subject to like passions as we are''. I am thankful that those men and women who were so mighty in prayer were just like ourselves. We are apt to think that those prophets and mighty men and women of old times were different from us. To be sure they lived in a much darker age, but they were of like passions with ourselves.

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837-1899) was an evangelist, author, and publisher associated with the Holiness Movement. In How to Study the Bible, he discusses the reasons why Bible study is so important for Christians. Recognizing the differences between individuals, he offers a variety of different methods for doing so. There are sections on observation, interpretation and application of the texts and the author also offers the tools for understanding the difficult passages in the scriptures.

D L Moody (1837-1899) was a prominent 19th century evangelist who founded the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago and Moody Publishers. Moody defines prevailing prayer as a form of prayer that involves the whole of one’s being and affects one’s mind, will and emotions. The author identifies and explains those factors that will increase the likelihood of prayers being answered, and described some of the stumbling blocks to all-consuming prayer.

Are you an overcomer? Or, are you plagued by little sins that easily beset you? Even worse, are you failing in your Christian walk, but refuse to admit and address it? No Christian can afford to dismiss the call to be an overcomer. The earthly cost is minor; the eternal reward is beyond measure. Dwight L. Moody is a master at unearthing what ails us. He uses stories and humor to bring to light the essential principles of successful Christian living.

Whoever neglects the second coming of Christ has only a mutilated gospel, for the Bible teaches us not only of the death and sufferings of Christ, but also of his return to reign in honor and glory. His second coming is referred to over 300 times. There is hardly any church that does not make a great deal of baptism, yet in all of Paul's epistles, baptism is spoken of only 13 times, while he speaks about the return of our Lord 50 times, and yet the church has had very little to say about it. The devil does not want us to see this truth, for nothing would wake up the church so much.

It is always a pleasure to me to speak on the subject of this volume. I think I would rather preach about the word of God than anything else except the love of God; because I believe it is the best thing in this world. We cannot overestimate the importance of a thorough familiarity with the Bible. I try to lose no opportunity of urging people by every means in my power to the constant study of this wonderful audiobook. If through the sections that follow, I can reach still others and rouse them to read their Bibles, not at random but with a plan and purpose, I shall be indeed thankful.

In this volume, the aim of the compiler has been to present these remarkable incidents connected with child life. In every instance the child is in the foreground of the picture, and the great Evangelist, in his own language, tells the story. Carefully selected from Mr. Moody’s work at home and abroad, and handsomely embellished, it is hoped that these true and wonderful stories, while uttered first in the presence of the great congregations, and therefore adapted to all, may prove of special and personal interest to the child.

A great many persons imagine that anything said about heaven is only a matter of speculation. They talk about heaven much as they would about the air. Now there would not have been so much in Scripture on this subject if God had wanted to leave the human race in darkness about it. ''All Scripture,'' we are told, ''is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect.

I have selected for my subject this afternoon the blessed hope. We are told to be ready to give a reason for the hope we have within us, and what we want to do is to find out what our hope is. I believe there are a great many people who are hoping and hoping, when they have no ground for hope. I don't know of any better way to find out whether we have true ground for the hope we have within us than to look in scripture to see what the scripture has to say.
