All his life, Viggo Larssen has been haunted by the same troubling dream, which he calls the Omen - a vision of a woman beckoning to him from the surface of a churning sea. Now, as he broods over his shipwrecked existence in a remote lighthouse off the outermost coast of Denmark, he is about to be borne backward by the current to a past he thought he had escaped forever.

On September 11, 2001, on a desolate beach on the outskirts of Copenhagen, police begin investigating the strange death of an unidentified woman. Surrounding the body are what appear to be offerings to the deceased: A book, a small noose, a dead golden canary, a linden tree branch, and a photo of the Kongslund Orphanage. As the police puzzle over their bizarre findings, the Twin Towers fall in walls of flame and the case is quickly overshadowed by the terror half a world away.

De syv børn havde én ting til fælles: De kom til verden på Rigshospitalets fødegang B, og de skulle alle syv bortadopteres. I månederne efter fandt frøkenerne på det berømte spædbørnehjem Kongslund nye familier til dem rundt om i Danmark, og de voksede op uden at ane det mindste om deres fortid. Et af børnene bar på en hemmelighed, som for enhver pris skulle skjules. Da en ældre kvinde mange år senere blev fundet død på en strandbred tæt ved børnehjemmet, opstod den sag, der kom til at plage hele nationen: Havde det hæderkronede børnehjem gennem et halvt århundrede skjult skandaler på højeste plan?

Sieben Waisenkinder aus Kongslund. Was ihnen angetan wurde, ist unverzeihlich. Und als würde ein Fluch auf ihnen liegen, haben alle schwere Schuld auf sich geladen. Marie, eines jener sieben, hat den Werdegang ihrer einstigen Heimgefährten über Jahrzehnte verfolgt. Als Erwachsene ruft sie alle zusammen. Aber will sie wirklich, dass ihnen Gerechtigkeit widerfährt? Oder trachtet sie vielmehr nach Abrechnung?
