Placing everyday characters between a rock and a hard place and then dialling up the pressure, he blends and balances the very Japanese with the very accessible, to spectacular effect.

Minoru Aose es un arquitecto de mediana edad cuya carrera y familia se desmoronaron con el estallido de la burbuja económica de Japón y que ha acabado refugiándose en la mediocridad. Fall 1: Inspektor Futawatari wird mit der personellen Umstrukturierung der Präfektur beauftragt, doch Kriminalpolizei-Legende Michio Osakabe weigert sich überraschend, in Ruhestand zu gehen. Osakabe wird zu einem Sandkorn im Getriebe der Polizeibürokratie - bis Futawatari darauf stößt, dass Osakabe nicht aufgehört hat, in einem grausamen Fall zu ermitteln, der nie gelöst wurde... Fall 2: Abteilungsleiterin Tomoko Nanao wird benachrichtigt, als eine junge Polizistin plötzlich nicht mehr zur Arbeit erscheint.
