Nació el 1 de marzo de 1810 en Zelazowa Wola, cerca de Varsovia. Su padre era francés y su madre polaca, se inició en el estudio del piano a los cuatro años y a los ocho ya ofrecía un concierto privado en Varsovia. Su primera obra publicada data de 1817. Dio sus primeros conciertos el año 1829, en la ciudad de Viena. A partir de 1831 vivió en París, donde trabajó como profesor, pianista y compositor.
