From our youth, we all remember a piece of clothing that was very special to us. For example, a scarf, a hat, or a sweater that has long been discarded; and yet, from time to time, it comes back to us as a wonderful memory. After many decades, for me, it was the memory of a Chicago Blackhawk sweater. At first, I hated this sweater, but through "the gift of hockey" I learned to love it. That's the gift. Jeb wanted to be a professional hockey player. He spent all his youth playing hockey and neglected his school work. However the only reason he did not play in the NHL was because he was size. Now in his old age, he feels bitter and depressed as he spends all his time watering the outdoor hockey rink. A black boy on one of the local hockey teams is struggling because of his hockey skills. The boy also struggles in school. Old Jeb decides to give the boy some hockey lessons; and in doing so, old Jed finds redemption by helping the young boy to succeed.

A girl seeks to find her long lost father by always wearing his tattered old hockey sweater. Also Jenny wants to play shinny hockey with the boys on the outdoor rink, but is stopped by the bully boys on the rink. A young Chinese boy is also stopped from playing. The Chinese boy and Jenny decide to play hockey by themselves down on the river. And in doing so they form a warm friendship that allows Jenny to find her father again.

It was written up as a spotlight story, meaning it was the best sports story of the day. The title of the article was "Sharing a Sacred Hockey Bond". This story also won the Pearson Prize Teen Choice Award.
