桐壺帝の寵愛を一身にうけていた更衣が若君をもうけました。 しかし、第一皇子の母である弘微殿(こきでん)の女御(にょうご)はじめ周囲の嫉妬や怨念が激しく、それに耐えかねたのか、病に伏し、里に下がって間もなく亡くなってしまいました。 悲しみにくれる帝は靫負(ゆげい)の命婦(みょうぶ)を更衣の母君のもとへ使わしますが、双方の嘆きは深く なるばかりです。
