大君は冷泉院にお輿入れいたしました。 落胆を隠せない蔵人の少将は、男(おとこ)踏歌(どうか)で｢竹河｣を謡いながら涙ぐむのでした。 やがて大君は女宮に続いて男御子をお産みになり、院の御寵愛を欲しいままにいたしますが、かえってその立場が段々と面倒なものになってゆきます。一方、蔵人の少将は出世をし、評判もなかなかいいようです。
