Billy Jim Horton, a reporter for the Fort Worth Daily, hears a story about an old man in Paradise Texas that claims to be Billy the Kid. History has "the Kid" being shot and killed in 1881 by Sherriff Pat Garrett. The editor of the paper allows Billy Jim to use his forthcoming vacation to follow the story.
