A healthy soldier comes upon an old witch and a hollow tree while on his way home from the war. Before long, he has acquired an old lighter and all the money he could want. She must earn money for her starving family, but no one buys her matchsticks. So she uses the matches to get warm and has an incredible experience on the last evening of the year.

It only thinks of what it will feel like when it is bigger, older, and wiser. One day, it is chopped down and made into a Christmas tree - and finds that it may be too late to experience anything.

A poor little hatchling, which is born into a duck flock, must endure a great deal of suffering. He gets bullied, yelled at, teased, and mocked, while at the same time he is dying, both from hunger and cold. He is close to being killed by a hunting dog and gets schooled by an arrogant cat who thinks it knows all about the world. But in the end, he discovers his proper place in life.
