About this listen

A heroic young thief and her family fight against the darkness that threatens the entire land in the riveting final volume of this fantasy adventure saga.

An increasingly talented and skilled shadowthief, Gatina of House Furtius—known in more rebellious circles as the Kitten of Night—continues her covert work in the ongoing struggle against the vile usurper Count Vichetral. Vichetral's dominion over the duchy of Alshar has grown ever darker, with slavery now legal and vicious gangs brutally enforcing his will.

Their enemies infiltrating even the Shadow Council in the hunt for Gatina and her family, Gatina's father decides to meet with the mighty Sea Lords and discover if any are willing to join the effort to take down Vichetral. The voyage also offers Gatina a chance to learn about her distant relatives, who wield their power amidst the waves, and to enhance her facility with her very own, newly forged shadowblade.

But danger can follow across water as well as land. And Gatina soon finds herself in a desperate battle from which the winner will sail away as the vanquished sinks into the briny deep . . . forever.

The Spellmonger: Legacy and Secrets trilogy introduces a younger Gatina, the Kitten of Night, as she comes into her own as a shadowmage.

The Cat and Kitten all at sea?

A great third (and final?) installment of the adventures experienced by the two apprentice shadowmages. This prequel to the main Spellmonger story arc is good and like the Hawkmaiden trilogy fits well to support the wider picture. Performed well by the narrator, I enjoyed it and would encourage other listeners of fantasy to try this trilogy too. suitable for older children as an intro to the world of magic and medieval feudal life, lightyears from earth.

Great accompaniment to spellmonger series

Not as good but v enjoyable nonetheless. Would definitely recommend as an easy listen. Doesn’t matter if you listen to these 1st or at any point in the series.

Everything we've come to expect

The Spellmonger series is one of my favourites for many reasons. This spin-off is just as brilliant and vivid as the main series. I didn't want to sop listening and it was always wrench to put this down and carry on with other things. The story is great as are the characters and the narration. I really got wrapped up in the world and I can't wait to do so again when the next book arrives.

annoying pronunciation

pity the narrator hadn't listened to all the other books to get the name pronunciations the same, it really grated and spoiled the audio book, I ended up skipping a lot of it.

Mmmm

I’ve enjoyed all the Spellmonger books, but this one wasn’t up to the previous standards. Don’t get me wrong, it was ok, but felt the plot a little week and predictable.

Disappointed

Not anywhere near Terry’s usual standard, repetitive and Gatina came across as more immature than in previous book in series.

Great book, not a great narrator

Love the story, great addition to the spellmonger franchise. I do wish that narrators would listen to the other audiobooks in the series and agree on pronunciation before recording though. Also narrator regularly breaks mid sentence and changes the meanings of them by inflection. Great book but I’d Recommend reading it from paper instead.

Can't get past the narration

Love the whole Spellmonger series but could not continue after the first hour, so I've no idea about the story. Likely it's great given Mancour does such a fine job of world building, characters and plot. The narration sounds like an AI - largely monotone, stilted and with emphasis in the wrong place. And it's jarring that the narrator pronounces names and places differently to the superlative John Lee for the central series. OK this is a side story about a female lead and a so a female narrator has been used but it's not a success. Please can we have John Lee re read them.
