• Ep 2. Start to Run: pace & distance
    Jan 13 2025

Welcome back to our brand new podcast series that we’re calling Start to Run. As part of the Women’s Running podcast, we’ll be sharing these special episodes every Monday to help you get yourself moving. Whether you’re a runner who’s been around the block a few times or this is all completely new to you, these episodes should have all the tools you need to make running feel simple. Each week, we’re tackling a different FAQ as we get back to basics, cut through the crap and make running simple again.

How fast should I be running?

This week, we get into the much discussed topic of pace – how quickly should we be running? We share our very favourite bits of advice on the rate of perceived effort which, in our humble opinion, is a much more important metric than how many minutes a mile you’re running.

How far should I be running?

We also get into distance and share our own tips on how to measure a run and what sort of length you should be aiming for at the beginning.

If you want more support with your running journey, make sure to subscibe to Women’s Running magazine this January and you’ll get 50% off AND a free beginner running guide for either 5K or 10K, your choice. Just head to womensrunning.co.uk/podoffer or hit the link in the show notes.

Plus, we’ve got a little email series to give you extra support too – weekly emails checking in and sharing some top tips. Sign up for these here: womensrunning.co.uk/beginners/learn-to-run-5k/

    Marathon training

We’ve got a corker of an episode for you today – top of the bill, we’ve got Jordan from Coopah, joining us mid-way through to talk to us about our training. Holly and I are running the London Marathon in April, and in order to get us to the start line we’ve been using Coopah, and we wanted to check in with Jordan that we’re on the right track. She puts us right about where we can flex with the plan – and where we can’t!

But before and after that we’ve got all sorts of stuff to talk about – including the 75 Hard Challenge, and various other things that have been getting us hot under the collar.

  • Ep 1. Start to Run: walking
    Jan 6 2025

In this brand new series from the Women’s Running Podcast, we’re making running simple again. Every week on Start to Run, Esther and Holly will cover a common myth, frequently asked question or tricky topic and get back down to basics. Whether you’re a seasoned runner returning from some time off or a total newbie, we’re here to help you get moving and to remind you that running doesn’t have to be complicated.

Walking, ‘Jeffing’ and taking it slow

Are you still a runner if you take walk breaks? In short, you obvs are. But in this episode we’re explaining why walking is such a fantastic run strategy and overall fitness tool. Long live Jeff, is all we have to say.

Couch to 5K, yay or nay?

We also share our thoughts on the oh-so-popular Couch to 5K app; which bits we love, and which bits we don’t love so much. Plus, we share our own beginner running tales and the things we wish we’d known.

  • Ep 229. Happy new year!
    Jan 2 2025

Welcome to episode 229 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running.

This episode is sponsored by Coopah, the running app. Use the code WOMENSRUNNING when you sign up for 2 free weeks and a further 20% off for a whole year.

    New year running

Happy new year, Pod Squad! We’re straight into it, thinking about resolutions and running, and annoying emails from people who expect me to run a marathon with about two weeks training. We do eventually get on to running you’ll be pleased to hear to chat about Hol’s training – only to have a moan about why some runs seem easier than others for no apparent reason. We talk for AGES about Gavin & Stacey, all pretty standard, but leads me on to a ramble about Eldorado – apols for anyone born after 1973 for that one. We have a bit more 2024 quiz, which shames me into admitting zero knowledge of US politics, or indeed UK, while remembering the birthday of Mel C. Sorry mum.

    Dec 26 2024

    Boxing Day

It’s boxing day, and we’re already talking about ripping down the decorations. We’ve got a bit of running chat, but it’s squashed in-between the second part of our Christmas Quiz, which leads on to much topical debate. We also launch into a toxic fitness email I’ve received, and tear it to shreds, as I’m sure you’d hope we would.

    Christmas party

At time of recording, it’s the day after our Christmas party, so we complete all this chat about booze and running with some hungover run chat. Swiftly followed by whether or not runners should wear gilets (discuss). All of this before we start talking about how our training is going.

And then we’re on to our absolute dream Christmas dinner, from aperitif to pudding. Yes, this isn’t to do with running, but when have we ever said that we only talk about running? Never. Don’t listen hungry. We finish by launching into part 1 of a two-part Christmas Quiz. The rest will be in our boxing day podcast, and we can’t wait!

  • Ep 10. Am I Nuts... for worrying about Christmas?
    Dec 16 2024

Welcome to Am I Nuts. This is the last episode in a special series of ten weekly podcasts from us at the Women’s Running podcast. I am your host Esther Newman, and she is your other host Holly Taylor.

Hol and I are natural born worriers, but with many of our worries, we’ve thought we were the only ones. We thought we were nuts. During this series, we’ve been chatting about the worries that make us feel that way – and ten episodes isn’t enough! If this episode resonates with you, or you have something you think we should talk about, then please email us at wrpodcast@anthem.co.uk and fingers crossed we’ll roll out another series.

    Christmas worries

We’ve gone seasonal for this episode: are we nuts for worrying about Christmas? Holly, as her name suggest, has always been very festive focused, and loved the season, but now is teetering on the edge of getting stressed about all the Christmas things: the money, the socializing, the expectation of joy. We talk through the stress of cooking, the stress of families and the stress of producing perfect presents.

Am I Nuts is brought to you by the Women’s Running podcast. Check out Women’s Running magazine, which currently has a brilliant offer for new subscribers: if you subscribe to Women’s Running magazine right now you get a year’s subscription to running app Coopah, worth £79.99, absolutely free.
